An update and a sincere thank you for all Square Attack subscribers.
Hey everyone - Keagen here, and while I’d like to be welcoming you back to another edition of the Square Attack Friday Newsletter, I’ve instead decided to provide an update on the direction of this project: I’ll be stepping away from writing the Square Attack for the foreseeable future.
Why’s that? The Square Attack has been one of my most important creative outlets over the last 3.5 years - I’ve truly enjoyed writing it. I wanted to build it into something with a manageable following (check), where I could keep my writing skills sharp (not for me to decide, but I think this is a check), and share the wonderful, stupid world of college football gambling with my friends (double check).
However, I’ve realized that my passion for sports writing lies more in the longer-form model, as opposed to shorter weekly missives. Specifically, the Penn State-Oregon recap reminded me of the type of piece I really enjoy writing. This worked when I could dedicate the time to long intros and detailed breakdowns every Friday, but the quality of the work over the last few weeks as travel/work/responsibilities/family/life have picked up hasn’t been up to my standard. More importantly, I haven’t been able to consistently deliver on the promises I’ve made to my amazing paid subscribers, which just doesn’t sit right with me.
What does this mean for me? No action required on your part.
Paid subscriptions will be cancelled and any unused balance on prepaid subscriptions will be refunded. You’ll probably get an email from Substack directly about this. If you ever get charged when you shouldn’t, please email me at thesquareattack@gmail.com.
Free subscribers are welcome to remain subscribed for if/when I decide to write more long-form content. No hard feelings if you unsubscribe.
So, now what? For those who remain subscribed, stay tuned. I might use this as a testing ground for other long-form content. Anything you get from the Square Attack will be at the very least sports-adjacent, I won’t spam you.
